Allergy & Food Safety

Version 0.1 · Last updated

Draft — pending counsel review

Gastroque helps you plan meals around allergies and diets. It cannot guarantee that any meal is safe for someone with a food allergy. Please read this before relying on Gastroque for anyone with a food allergy, intolerance, coeliac disease or another medical diet.

What Gastroque does

When you add an allergy or diet for someone at your table, Gastroque treats it as a hard rule. Software checks every recipe against each diner's restrictions before you see it, including common hidden sources — for example fish in Worcestershire sauce, tree nuts in pesto, and soy and wheat in soy sauce. For “strict” allergies, Gastroque keeps the allergen out of the whole meal and treats “may contain” ingredients as present.

What Gastroque can't do

Recipes are written with artificial intelligence and checked against our ingredient database. AI can make mistakes, and our database can be incomplete or wrong. We don't know which brands you buy: packaged foods change their ingredients and “may contain” warnings, and the same product can differ between countries and stores. We can't see your kitchen, so we can't control cross-contact from shared pans, boards, toasters, fryers, oil or surfaces.

What we ask of you

Read the label of every packaged ingredient, every time you buy it. Check with the person who has the allergy (or their parent or guardian) before serving. Follow the cooking order and separation steps in the recipe, and clean equipment between plates. If you're unsure about an ingredient, leave it out or choose another dish. Keep any emergency medication prescribed to the person (such as an epinephrine auto-injector) nearby and follow their allergy action plan. For severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis, ask the person's allergist whether recipes from any app are appropriate.

Not medical advice

Gastroque is a meal-planning tool. It is not a medical device and not a substitute for advice from a doctor, allergist or registered dietitian. Options such as coeliac, low-sodium, diabetes-friendly, low-FODMAP, pregnancy-safe and alpha-gal follow general published guidance; they are not a treatment plan. Nutrition figures are estimates.

Food safety

Cook to the internal temperatures given in each recipe and use a thermometer where we suggest one. Refrigerate cooked food within 2 hours (1 hour above 32 °C / 90 °F). Cooked leftovers keep 3–4 days in the fridge. Prep and storage times in Prep Plans are conservative guides; if food looks, smells or tastes wrong, throw it out.

If someone has a reaction

For trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, faintness or any severe symptom, use prescribed emergency medication and call your local emergency number (911 in the US) immediately.

When everyone is safe, please tell us through “Report a problem” on the recipe or at safety@gastroque.com so we can investigate and fix the cause.

Library recipes

Recipes in the Gastroque Library were checked for the people they were first created for, not for you. When you add one to your plan, Gastroque checks it again against your table.
